FAQ: Traveling to the Abaco Islands
Whether it’s a lifelong dream of yours to sail in the Bahamas or you’re just hearing about the Abaco Islands for the first time—this list will help you prep for your Caribbean sailing vacation. If you have any other questions after reading this, contact our Bahamas sailing school, and we will be happy to provide more information!
Are the Abacos Islands Safe to Sail?
Yes! The Abacos Islands are one of the safest regions in the Bahamas. Not only do they have a lower crime rate than other popular islands, but they are also one of the safest places for sailing in the Bahamas. The channels are properly marked in most places, and they experience smaller swells than other parts of the Bahamas.
Where Do You Sail to in the Abacos Islands?
Our Bahamas sailing school courses begin and end in Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island. We visit many of the most popular locations in the area, including Man-O-War Cay, Hope Town, and Treasure Cay.
Do I Need Any Vaccinations To Visit the Abaco Islands?
No! Unless you travel from a region with a high yellow fever risk, most visitors don’t need vaccinations when sailing in the Bahamas. However, if you are at risk of complications from illnesses, you may want to consult your doctor about certain vaccines, including Typhoid fever and Hepatitis.
How Long Should I Visit?
Our Bahamas sailing school ASA courses are 6 days long. But with all the beautiful beaches and fun things to do in the Abaco Islands, you may want to extend your stay to 7-14 days in the Bahamas!
What’s the Best Way to Get Around?
We think sailing in the Bahamas is the best way to get around. You can see more of the Caribbean Sea and discover some of the best beaches and dive spots that you can’t access by car. When you get back on land, taxis are an easy way to get from the airport to Marsh Harbour, where you’ll find the best restaurants and bars.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Sailing in the Abacos is most popular from November to April. May is the best month to visit if you want to avoid the crowds but still enjoy great weather.
Do I Need to Exchange Currency?
No! You can use the USD anywhere in the Abaco Islands. You may want to carry some cash, as small businesses don’t always accept credit cards.
How Do I Get to the Abacos Islands?
When you take American Sailing courses with our Bahamas sailing school, you will want to book a flight to Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH). Once you land, you can take a short taxi ride to Marsh Harbour, which costs around $25.00.
