FAQ: Bahamas Sailing Weather

SAILING FAQS 'Bahamas Sailing Weather'

If you are taking Bahamas ASA courses for the first time, we’ve created a list of frequently asked questions about the weather to help you plan your trip. From the best time of year to sail, to what weather app to use at sea, these are some FAQs our clients often have before sailing in the Bahamas.

When Is the Best Time for Sailing in the Bahamas?

If you are looking for the best time of year to sail, plan your Bahamas ASA courses between December and April. The temperatures are usually mild (rarely exceeding 85 degrees) and the trade winds are ideal for sailing. You can expect winds between 10 and 15 knots during these months.

Do the Bahamas Get Hurricanes?

Yes, during hurricane season, the highest chance of tropical storms is generally earlier in the season. There is also a higher chance of rain from June through October.

Will You Sail in Any Weather?

While we do offer Bahamas ASA courses during the rainy season (rain or shine), we will never sail during a Force Majeure event. If there are any hurricanes or significant storms predicted during your trip dates for your Bahamas ASA courses, we will not sail. You have a 3-month window from your scheduled dates to rebook, and you can contact Go Sail Bahamas here

Is the Weather Nice During Shoulder Season?

If you are looking to experience pleasant weather but want to find lower rates for sailing in the Bahamas, you can plan a trip during May or November. The weather is still typically mild during these months, just before and after hurricane season, and it’s outside of peak season.

Are the Bahamas Windy?

Yes, the Bahamas are often windy. The good news is that the average 10 to 15 knots during peak season is perfect for sailing in the Bahamas!

What Sailing Weather Apps Should I Use?

You should use sailing-specific weather apps when chartering a sailboat or taking Bahamas ASA courses. Some of our instructors’ favorites include Windy.app, WindGuru, and SailFlow. These are all available for Androids and iPhones.

How Should I Pack for Sailing?

We recommend bringing a swimsuit and dressing in light layers. Be sure to carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat. Also, remember there are bugs in the Bahamas, so a good, reef-safe repellent is recommended.

How to Check Sailing Conditions?

In addition to using a sailing weather app, you can check the National Weather Service (NWS) website and use resources like Buoyweather.com.
