Are the Bahamas Safe?

While some parts of the Bahamas, including parts of Nassau, have safety issues, Go Sail  Bahamas doesn’t go anywhere near the higher crime regions. We stick to sailing around the Abaco Islands, which are very safe.

What Is the Safest Island in the Bahamas?

The Abacos Islands are some of the safest islands in the Bahamas to sail around. Weather and water conditions around these islands are generally favorable for safe sailing. You can generally expect gentle breezes and mostly calm waters. There is also a relatively low crime rate in the Abaco Islands.

Is It Safe to Drink the Water in the Bahamas?

The water in the Bahamas is generally safe to drink. However, if you are in more remote places when you dock, it’s best to stick with bottled water, as some smaller towns do not have access to clean water. All Go Sail Bahamas sailboats come with desalinators and fresh drinking water on board.

Can You Safely Sail in the Bahamas Year Round?

Yes, but there are some things to keep in mind. While you can book a sailing vacation year-round, the Bahamas do get heavy winds and rains during hurricane season from June to November. We will never set sail if hurricanes are predicted or actively occurring, and instead, we will reschedule your trip within 3 months of your booking date.

Where Can I Anchor Safely?

Knowing where to anchor is an important aspect of Bahamas sailing safety. The Abaco Islands are a very safe part of the Bahamas to sail, but there are submerged power lines in some areas. The Cruising Guide to Abaco, Bahamas: 2025 is a great resource with maps that show “no anchor” zones and areas to avoid when anchoring short-term or overnight.

Like anywhere in the ocean, there are sharks, jellyfish, lionfish, and other sea creatures that can pose potential threats. Are There Pirates in the Bahamas?
