5 Steps to Earning Your International Sailing License in the Bahamas

Text: Earning Your International Sailing License in the Bahamas with sailboat and coastal view.Getting an International Sailing License is not required to sail in the Bahamas, but it’s an important certification to have when you plan to sail more in the future. In many locations worldwide, including many sailing destinations in Europe and the Mediterranean, an IPC or similar international sailing license is required.

When you take Bahamas ASA courses, you will receive a Bahamas IPC, allowing you to charter a bareboat in locations requiring sailing licenses. Here are the 5 steps you’ll need to take to earn your Bahamas IPC or other sailing license.

1. Choose Which International Sailing License You Want

There are 3 common international sailing licenses available from most sailing courses. There is the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), the Sailing License and Credentials (SLC), and the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). Most US sailors choose the IPC because it is offered by more sailing schools. You also don’t need as much previous sailing experience for this certification as you do for the SLC. When you take Bahamas ASA courses, you can earn your IPC!

2. Take Relevant Sailing Courses

Once you’ve decided on which license you want, it’s time to take the relevant sailing lessons. When you take Bahamas ASA courses, you will learn many basic skills for sailing. To earn a Bahamas IPC, you will need to complete ASA 101, ASA 103, and ASA 104. These courses teach you the basics of keelboat sailing, coastal cruising, and bareboat sailing.

3. Apply for Your License

After you’ve completed the Bahamas ASA courses, you can apply to receive an IPC sailing license. Go Sail Bahamas can help you apply for the IPC. Just send us a passport-quality photo (600px by 600px) after you complete your courses with us, and we will do the rest!

4. Purchase the Certificate

The IPC certificate is $50, and you can sign up online. If you take Go Sail Bahamas ASA courses, we will include the Bahamas IPC for free after completion of ASA 104!

5. Receive Your Sailing License

Once you’ve taken all the necessary steps, you’ll receive your International Proficiency Certificate. Carry this with you when chartering a bareboat in any country that requires an IPC or similar license.
